How to restrict trial email content for a 100% coupon customers?

Why Trial email notification is requesting payment for subscriptions with a 100 % coupon discount applied?

How to avoid sending the request for payment content or the 'update payment method' button in the trial end emails for subscriptions with 100% coupon?

How can I restrict the email content for specific coupon-based or plan customers?

How do I restrict the 'Update payment method' button on trial emails only for some plans?


Summary


Trial Management email notifications will have default email content configured respectively. However, if you want to avoid this for certain customers, we can manually customize any email content by removing the ‘Update payment method’ button and creating segmentation for targeted audiences. 


Note: Segmentation feature is available only for Scale and Enterprise plans. Check out our plan and pricing page.

If your plan does NOT support segmentation, then you can restrict content on trial email for specific coupon customers using the mail merge option


Solution


1. For Scale and Enterprise Plans: Segment


To customize email notifications for specific audiences, you need to create a segmentation/list of customers to who you wish to send emails and customize the email accordingly. 


Email segments:


Navigate to Subscription page > Filter list > Coupons > Contains only > Coupon (100% discount ) > Apply Filter



Then click on ‘Save Filter’ and create a name to specify these customer’s lists and ensure ‘Make this filter accessible to all’ is enabled.





Once the Customer segment requirements are met, we can now customize the email as per our requirements.


Navigate to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Email Notifications > Trial Management > ‘EDIT’ existing email notification (or) Add Notification.


To add additional notifications click on ‘Add Notification’ and you will be prompted with a new window with two options.


  1.  ‘Choose the event to notify at / Add a reminder or follow-up’ and choose it as ‘Trial Expiry’

  2.  ‘Send Notifications to’ the recently created segment for 100% discounted coupon (or) Full Discount.



Click ‘Add’ and then you can customize the email by clicking on the ‘Edit’ button.


2. Launch & Rise and Plans: Mail Merge Usage


Since the ‘Segmentation’ option is not available for All plans, we would not be able to send emails to specific audiences however, Mail Merge feature is available for all the Plans. This feature serves as a work around to the Segment feature. 


To add Mail Merge, navigate from Settings > Configure Chargebee > Email Notifications > Trial Management > On Trial Expiry >Edit



How to use the mail merge feature?


Display content for a specific condition: (For example: do not display a few lines for 100% coupon subscriptions)


You can add content including a button ('update payment method') when a coupon is not applied. If the field is empty or does not have a specific value, the content entered within the block is displayed. " ^ " indicates that the condition specified has to be false.


To add this MergeVar field, add the Open and Close Coupon name field tag on the email content:



Sample code to be placed in the email body : {{^coupon.name=Coupon name}} Your content {{/coupon.name=Coupon name}}


Coupon name: The Coupon name created for the 100% discount

Your content: Any content that you would like to add between the tags.



Once updated, click on the curly brackets ‘{ } that appear when you select the text box in the email body. Then navigate to the CUSTOMER and select Payment Method Update URL
