Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is payment security regulation brought forth by the European Banking Authority (EBA), to ensure that multi-factor authentication is performed for card payments. EBA has made it mandatory to implement SCA as a part of the Revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) initiative. The amendment is effective from September 14, 2019.
SCA applies,
- If you have a merchant account with a processor/acquirer from European Economic Area (EEA) and if you are collecting payments from cards issued in EEA &
- If you are a merchant based out of Europe or have a significant customer base in Europe, then you should be prepared to handle SCA.
In order to comply with SCA, you’d have to incorporate 3DS authentication.
