Why users are not able to change their email addresses themselves on the customer portal?

In Chargebee, the customer portal account is directly linked to the customer’s email address. Since the login session is created using the email, editing the email address is not an option.


So, the only possible way is to change the email address from the admin console (web interface) using the Change Customer Details option on the customer details' page. Here's a screenshot. 




When you do this, Chargebee will send a link to the new email address to verify the portal account.
