Chargebee offers three options to configure taxes in your account -
Manually entering the taxes
Avalara integration (for US & Canada)
Upload a CSV
This article talks about setting up your taxes using a CSV import when there are multiple taxes for different regions with the country (when not using Avalara).
To configure the taxes, navigate to Settings > Configure Chargebee > Taxes > Add Region (select the region).
This option is currently available for United States and Canada.
You can use the “upload CSV” option for complex use cases such as:
Multiple tax rates applicable to your sales
Region-based, city, country or ZIP code-based Taxation
To upload the tax rates, you can use the sample CSV file that allows you to add city, county and ZIP code based tax rates
Depending on your tax requirements, you need to provide some or all of the following details in the CSV file:
Country code (2-letter ISO 3166 alpha-2 country code)
State code (ISO 3166-2 province code)
ZIP code
Tax name (GST, VAT, etc.) and tax rate
Jurisdiction type (say, the country where the tax is applicable), name (name of the country), and the code assigned to the jurisdiction name.
If you need to configure more than one tax rate in Chargebee, you need to repeat this information in the CSV file, for each tax rate. You can use this option to configure up to four different tax rates (including GST/PST).
Note:
If you are looking to apply a common tax rate to all ZIP codes in the corresponding state that you have mentioned, you can specify the symbol * for a state in the CSV file.
For example, the first row contains New York State and * - this would mean that the tax rate of 4% will apply to all ZIP codes in New York State.
To configure the CSV correctly, you should specify only the ZIP code range for a specific jurisdiction and its corresponding tax rate. Or if there is a single ZIP code with a different tax rate, you can mention that in one whole row.
From the above screenshot, if the customer's ZIP code falls in between the range specified in row 2, the tax rate of 8% will be applied. If the customer's ZIP code is 14706 (row 3), then a tax rate of 8.5% will be applied. Finally, if customers’ ZIP code does not fall within the criteria specified in row 2 & 3, the tax rate of 4% will be applied.
