We would like to offer a paid trial to our users. We are aware that this is not a feature yet, and also not on the roadmap so far. We would like to hack something together to achieve similar functionality.
I have a few questions regarding this:
I was thinking of using an add-on to charge for the trial period. One could for example add a one-time $5 add-on to a subscription that has a 14 day free trial, include this add-on with the first payment period, and then set the add-on to invoice immediately instead of invoicing together with the next invoice. Is this possible? Due to the subscription still being in trial and not active yet I wasn't sure if this works before the trial has ended.
Another way would be to subscribe the user to a one-time $5 plan, and then automatically switch them to a recurring plan after 14 days or so, if they haven't cancelled. Is this possible? Can I make an API request to change a users subscription from a one-time payment plan to a recurring plan at any time?
Thank you for your help!

Hey Louis,
Chargebee offers only a “free” trial option for the plans at the moment. However, you can collect a trial fee using the Auto Addon option. The Auto Addon option allows you to group addons with a plan so that the addons are automatically added to a subscription when the plan is selected.
To collect a trial fee for a subscription, you can attach anon-recurring addonto the plan and choose to apply it on the “subscription-trial start” event. To do this, follow the steps below:
Attach a non-recurring addon to the plan:
First, create a non-recurring addon with the trial fee and then navigate to the plan page to which you’d like to attach the addon.
Under the addons section, and choose the “Restrict Addons” option and select the non-recurring addon for the trial charge. To select the event when this would be applied, choose “Subscription trial start” under “Charge customers on” option.
The addon will be automatically applied to the subscription when the plan is selected. Here’s a screenshot of a plan with the trial addon attached to it.
