Apologies for missing your message.
If you choose to create your own customer portal by implementing a fork of Chargebee's Open Source Customer Portal then it would be independent of Chargebee’s versioning system.
This means that irrespective of whether you are using Hosted Pages v2 or Checkout v3, you could have your own Customer Portal setup.

At the moment, if the customer subscribes to a "trial" plan, an option is not available to change subscription on the portal. However, I'll tag this as a feature request for our engineering team to consider implementing and let you know when it is made available in the future.

We'd like users to be able to change plans using the customer portal while the trial is still in progress. However, the documentation seems to indicate only an "Active" subscription can change plans from the customer portal.
Is this limitation really in place, and is there any workaround?
